Alternative Energy Specialist

Summary:

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Assists the MEC Lead Alternative Specialist planning of alternativeenergy equipment use by grantees and field camps.

  • Develops recommendations for new alternative energy equipment purchases to fill needs for current season or future needs.

  • Assesses suitability of equipment to grantee needs, designing andimplementing modifications and custom fabrications as required.

  • Installs systems in the field as needed, including integration withconventional power grids are required.

  • Performs diagnosis and repair of alternative energy equipment andsystems as required.

  • Provides training in operation and field maintenance to grantees andsupport personnel.

  • Performs on-site work to equipment in field as required.

  • Develops plans for future expansion of alternative energy program inUSAP field science.

  • Documents all work performed and maintains pertinent records.

  • Operates and maintains shop equipment including welders, compressors, presses, etc.

  • Maintains adequate supply of spare parts and tools, in coordination withthe materials person.

  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area.

  • Perform duties in support of Science Support Division metrics (as provided by your supervisor).

  • Support the achievement of RPSC metrics, whether they can be directly or indirectly, effected by your activities.

  • Comply with all PAE Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Work to achieve PAE goals and contractual commitments.

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.

  • Performs other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years training at a technical school is highly desirable.

  • Electrician certification is highly desirable.

  • Four years experience in design, installation, maintenance and repair of photovoltaic and wind generator systems is required.

  • Knowledge and experience in electrical power generation, including electrical power distribution, and switchgear operation and repair is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident Status is required.
