GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
Maintains communications watch during shift. Ensures that all incoming calls via phone, satellite, or radio are acknowledged and acted upon.
Operates HF/VHF radio, satellite phones, telephone equipment and office equipment
Relays aircraft schedules and movements to field camps and other stations
Maintains radio logs and status reports utilizing Word, Excel, Power Point, and other applications in a timely and accurate manner
Establishes and responds to communications with other national programs as required.
Responds to inquiries from non-governmental organizations and media agencies according to established procedures
Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner
Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military organizations, and other organizations via phone, radio, email, and in person in a professional manner
Recognizes and reports office and communications equipment malfunctions or failures to technicians; documents and assists with troubleshooting as needed
Tracks vehicle travel away from station; includes check-out call, estimated return time and extensions, and check-in call upon arrival
Tracks field camps (personnel remaining in the field overnight or longer); includes daily check-in call, keeping track of communications available, relaying flight information and other messages, and providing other support as requested.
Supports any local or field personnel by relaying messages, seeking information, or establishing radio-phone patches
Initiates emergency response procedures for overdue camp, overdue vehicle, distress call, request from another national program, rescue coordination center or other agency, or other situations per established procedure.
Provides communications and administrative support in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) as assigned
Supports radio communications as required during emergency incidents and drills
Works a varied schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage of the communicationscenter; includes working during station holidays and special events
Assists MacOps Supervisor with projects as required
Maintains a safe work center, adheres to ASC Safety guidelines, andparticipates in weekly safety meetings; ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Performs other duties as assigned
High school graduate or equivalent is required.
Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications required for offer consideration (training offered through FEMA).
Minimum two years’ experience in customer service, radio operations, communications technology or related field required.
Computer skills required, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and e-mail applications.
Good judgment and exceptional communication skills required.
Must have an ability to independently prioritize requests by level of urgency.
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
