Utility Mechanic

Job Title: Utility Mechanic

Reports to: PM Foreman

Employment Type: Seasonal Contract

Summary:

Support the Antarctic Support Contract and the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program, accomplishing hands-on facilities maintenance and repairs on maintenance and construction projects as needed.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.

  • Performs major overhauls to include dismantling, replacing parts and making repairs to all facilities-related equipment including heating, ventilating, cooling, refrigeration, Overhead doors, hoists, compressors, hydronic systems, pumps, kitchen/galley equipment, shop tools and a wide variety of other types of equipment and their component parts including some non-facility capital assets such as exercise, medical and lab equipment.

  • Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with the Preventive Maintenance Program.

  • Diagnoses and repairs failures as they occur in support components including kitchen equipment.

  • Assists Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and PM Foreman in determining re-supply of inventory.

  • Acts as first responder to trouble calls on facilities and utilities systems.

  • Performs plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs to support systems and structures as necessary.

  • Submits reports as required by supervisor, including the quality assurance self-inspections.

  • Operates tracked vehicles and other equipment for station maintenance, cargo handling and snow melting.

  • Works outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions as required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or GED is required.

  • U.S./State Vehicle Operators License required.

  • HVAC-R license is preferred.

  • Minimum 4 years experience required in a wide variety of facility maintenance.

  • Experience in an industrial or commercial environment is preferred.

  • Ability to read design drawings and diagrams is preferred.

  • Previous experience with Maximo inventory/work order system is preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
