Recreation Supervisor

The Morale, Welfare, & Recreation (MWR) Supervisor will be based at one of four locations in Iraq and serve the Life Support Services contract in support of the Department of State (DOS). This position will be responsible for supervision and execution of MWR programs and facility operations in accordance with the MWR Annex, SOPs, and PAE Management objectives, and will report to the Site Services Manager. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.


 Oversee all facets of the MWR operation.

 Plan daily, monthly, and seasonal recreational events.

 Supervise and train subordinate staff.

 Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility, and act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.

 Implement appropriate emergency plan in the event of incidents and provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.

 Present professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain a high standard of customer service.

 Ensure facility and staff present a well-organized, safe, and professional environment for patrons.

 Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports.

 Adhere to SOP procedures, work instructions, and PAE policies and procedures.

 Perform other duties as assigned.


 Minimum Acceptable Experience Level:

o Two (2) years’ experience in customer service related field.

o One (1) year experience working in sports/recreation related field

o One (1) year supervisory experience.

o Maintenance experience with fitness machines.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o Able to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

o Customer service skills.

o Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with a team.

o Commitment to maintaining a high performance team, which delivers customer service excellence.

o Able to organize events and activities.

o Ability to collect, analyze, and summarize data and to prepare clear and concise reports.

o Exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently.

o Good physical condition to endure long periods of standing when overseeing programs, recurring bending, stooping, stretching, twisting and heavy lifting (over 50 pounds), and demonstration of physical fitness techniques.

 Education: A high school diploma or GED.

 Licenses and Certifications:

o Valid drivers’ license from Home of Record.

o Life Guard Certification or ability to pass Life Guard Certification Course (if applicable to site).

o Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid, AED Certifications.

 Security Vetting: Already possess a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) or be able to obtain a favorable MRPT certification prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification level for the duration of the contract.

 Language Skills: Strong, professional, oral and written English communication skills.

 Citizenship: US Citizenship is not required.

 Medical: Favorable passage of a drug screen and physical examination.


 Department of State experience.

 One (1) year of international experience in challenging locations, preferably working in the Middle East, with a working knowledge of customs and cultural differences.

 Experience working with PAE.


 Knowledge of principles and processes involved in supporting MWR operations.

 Experience providing excellent customer services.

 Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires handling multiple tasks at a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules.

 Cross-cultural sensitivity with an international perspective.

 Excellent organizational and time management skills.

 Expert computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel.

 Ability to become an active and functioning member of a team.

 Must have the ability to be innovative and be an agent for change.

 Expert communication skills to facilitate and disseminate information.


This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120- 130 degrees Fahrenheit/50-55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
