General Services Technician/Carpenter
Reports to: PAE-AEK General Services Supervisor
Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required to Camp Alvarado, Camp Sullivan and outlying sites. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.
Working Environment: The candidate will work in office and residential facilities with additional duties on and around an active U.S. Embassy and related DOS facilities in Afghanistan including exposure to the dangers inherent with traveling to and working on such sites.
Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day, six days a week minimum. Candidate must be available for afterhours call outs and emergencies and participates in a duty phone rotation.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides a full range of light construction services as further described below:
Thermal & Moisture Protection – Maintain and repair roof and roofing systems to include envelope and primary roof membrane, insulation, gravel, flashings, vent stacks, pitch pockets walkways, exposed concrete, ladders, roof hatches, scuttle, sun decks, platforms, parapets, glass sections, and glazing joints (non FEBR), atrium expansion joints, storm drains, scupper, power, and mechanical. Streets & Walks – Maintain building entrances, stairs, ramps and rails. Repair damage to walkways, formal paths, drives, curb, gutter and paving resulting from normal wear and tear, incidental delamination and spalling, pot holes and timely degradation of surfaces. Specific repairs may include repairs to asphalt, structural concrete, gravel and stone areas, parking areas, brick pavers, pedestrian walks, buildings approaches, striping, signage, expansion and control joints. Interior Spaces – Maintenance and repair of all interior finishes including glass and trim, building hardware to include locks, latch, lock cylinders, closures and door frames; repair to ceilings, flooring and raised floor systems; repair and refinish and cosmetic details to painted areas, carpets, drywall, floor tile, paneling, wall covering, glass, trim and other finishes. Also includes interior signage, directional signage and room designations and building evacuation routes. Exterior Structures and Foundations – Maintenance and repair to exterior finishes including concrete and masonry systems, stucco and plaster control and expansion joints, exposed or painted concrete, glass and glazing materials, solar screen and support structure, sills and soffits, nosing’s, control joints, settlement and movement conditions, building and property fences, barrier walls, railings, posts, anchors, waterproofing, storm water management including trench drains, French drains, catch basins, erosions, curb inlets, gratings, control joints; and the appearance of all exposed surfaces. Also includes building signage, pathway directional signs, and street signs. Painting – Maintenance and repair of interior and exterior painted surfaces including preparing surfaces, mixing/tinting paints and stains, and applying paint, stains or varnish to prepared surfaces. This includes painting of items such as piping and equipment, exposed structural steel, equipment frames, concrete, wood, and other surfaces found in and around the office and residential areas. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:
Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
Must have 5 years as experience as a journeyman in the construction trades. A journeyman carpenter is preferred.
Must have good customer-oriented service skills.
Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office programs to include Word and Excel.
Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds.
- High school diploma or GED required.
Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
Clearance Required: Must have a Secret security clearance.
