Engineering Technician IV - Culinary/Cook

Duties and General Functions:

Position is on Navy Ship Narragansett

  • The unlicensed crew are directly accountable to the Mate or his relief.

  • They performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment, paints the ship and tow, cleaning the interior and exterior of the ship including the quarters, wheelhouse, galley, heads and companionways and other cleaning duties as directed by the Mate.

  • Make up and breaking the tow, standing lookout or riding the head of the tow as a lookout and performing various tasks necessary to carry out the above such as operating winches and line handing, including splicing and throwing lines.

  • In addition, when assigned to watch duty, this incumbent performs a variety of duties, including looking for obstructions in path of vessel, steering vessel, serving on security patrol, and standing gangway watch.

  • They may be required to prepare meals as directed by the master of the ship. Culinary Specialist operate and manage Navy messes, afloat and ashore, established to subsist naval personnel. They estimate quantities and types of food items required, and assist Supply Officers in ordering and towage of subsistence items and procurement of equipment and mess gear. CSs check delivery for quantity an assist medical personnel in inspection for quality.

  • Prepare menus, and plan, and serve meals.

  • Maintain food service spaces and associated equipment in a clean and sanitary condition, including storerooms and refrigerated spaces.

  • Operate and manage shipboard living quarters and shore based hotel-type quarters.

  • Good team work and enjoy working with people.

  • Ability to do detailed work, follow instructions and keep accurate records is important.

  • Work in kitchens, dining areas, living quarters and food service storerooms aboard ships and shore bases.

  • Work is both physically and mentally challenging and involves working as part of a team.

  • Good arithmetic and verbal skills, creative ability and an interest in nutrition and culinary arts are also helpful.

  • Must possess the appropriate Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)

  • Vessel Masters require Coast Guard licenses of appropriate tonnage for vessel being operated.

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.

  • Travel Required up to 120 days a year

  • Works with Hazards materials.

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in performing the stated functions.

  • All Candidates will be required to pass a Drug Screening

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Successful completion of technical school, trade school, or advanced armed services technical school curriculum or course in electricity, electronics, avionics, mechanics, armaments/ordnance, or engineering technology; or completion of at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of courses at an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical curriculum. Clearance Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen

  • Must be able to obtain and hold a Secret Clearance. Work Conditions: Conditions will vary. Most work performed at sea in varying weather conditions. Work will include Standing Navigational watch for a min of 8 hours per day, which will include standing and the Monitoring of radio communications, conversing with US Naval Ships, and monitoring all radar contacts. Other duties will include at times, assisting the Deck Crew in the handling of tag lines, launching and recovering of 8 meter RHIB boats and other types of craft used for marine targets. Working on deck may be in adverse weather condition and may require late working hours at times. Other responsibilities may include procurement, some clerical duties, tracking and maintaining the ships safety equipment condition and expiration dates. May occasionally be required to lift objects whose weight exceeds 50 pounds. Special vision abilities to perform this job are close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus
